The Homework Before Marketing Framework
The Homework Before Marketing Framework

When people feel ready to build a business around their expertise, they often think they need better marketing. Better strategies, better tactics, a clearer niche, a stronger personal brand. So they jump directly into marketing, following what the gurus teach.

But here's what nobody talks about.

Marketing gurus assume you already know what you're trying to say.

Most people don't.

If you feel exhausted by marketing, if it takes enormous time and energy but gives you little results, if you'd rather be doing the real work of solving client problems... the issue probably isn't your marketing. The issue is that you skipped the work that comes before marketing.

Here's why this matters. Marketing is a delivery service. It delivers messages to your audience. But it's on you to prepare the content of those messages. You need to be clear what to talk about, what to say, and why someone should stop scrolling, recognize your perspective and feel the pull to go deeper with you.

That clarity doesn't come from a hook or a formula. It's a process.

I call it the homework before marketing, and it has three stages:

  1. Recognition This is where you notice what you consistently see that others overlook. You're sensing a deeper layer behind the problem you're trying to solve, noticing something that keeps pulling at your attention. But because you're so familiar with seeing it, you might not recognize it as valuable information. You might think it's just the way you are, a personal quirk. Recognition is the stage where you begin to notice your lens.

  2. Articulation This is where you understand why what you see matters. Not just to you, but to the people you're here to serve. What becomes possible when someone works with you because you see things this way? What changes for them because of your perspective? Articulation is where recognition becomes value, and where you find the language to express it clearly.

  3. Messaging This is where you build the clarity that helps you know with certainty in your bones what deserves to be communicated about your work. You create a strong messaging system around your brand and offers. You understand what sets you apart from everyone else doing similar work. Messaging is where your perspective becomes a conversation your audience can recognize and join.

Only then does marketing become effective. Because now you're not just following tactics... you're delivering a message that was worth preparing.

Marketing isn't difficult because marketing is complicated. It's difficult because most people haven't done the work that comes before it. They haven't recognized what they're actually bringing to the conversation.

That's the homework.

If you've been feeling like your marketing isn't working, this might be why. And if this resonates, I'd love to work with you.
